Dublin Bay Sail for Schools introduces students to a traditionally rigged wooden sailing vessel. With professional crew guidance, the class explores practical sailing tasks from Dún Laoghaire Marina.
How does the Dublin Bay Sail Experience work?
First, your class boards a traditionally rigged wooden sailing vessel at Dún Laoghaire Marina. A professional crew then introduces practical skills for operating the boat. As the group learns, students can take part in tasks such as helming and sail handling.
The vessel departs from and returns to Dún Laoghaire Marina. Usually, the route heads towards Howth or Dalkey Island. However, tides and wind determine the direction of the sail.
Choose a four-hour half-day booking or an eight-hour full day. During the programme, your students can explore a range of sailing tasks:
- Sail hoisting and setting
- Helming (steering)
- Anchoring
- Pilotage and navigation
- Communications – VHF radio
- Use of all electronic instruments
- Watch-keeping
- Cooking
- Engine monitoring
- Climbing the rig
- Climbing out on the bowsprit (the netting at the front of the vessel)
- A three-metre RIB can offer closer access to the water or safety cover for other activities. In addition, kayaks, surfboards, stand-up paddleboards and other activities are available on request.

What should guests arrange separately?
- Food & beverages beyond the listed tea, coffee and biscuits cost extra. If you need catering, we can organise it through the chosen venue.
- Transport to and from the venue costs extra. However, we can organise it for you.
- Clothes and footwear. Good footwear. Soft-soled shoes are ideal. Dress for the weather to include an rain jacket / windbreaker.
