Graduate onboarding and experiential team development for IMI

This graduate onboarding programme for IMI ran across two days, combining practical team challenges with structured learning and reflection for a cohort of 29 participants.

The brief

The programme was designed to help a new graduate group build relationships quickly while developing communication, collaboration, planning and team-awareness skills.

Rather than separating learning from team building, the programme used practical challenges to give participants something real to discuss and review together.

How the programme was structured

The two-day format allowed the group to move between practical activity and structured reflection rather than treating the event as one long competition.

Participants had opportunities to communicate, plan, adapt and contribute in different ways. Reviews then connected what happened during the challenges back to how teams work in a professional setting.

Using two different settings also gave the programme variety while keeping one clear development theme across both days.

Why experiential onboarding works

Graduate onboarding can involve a large amount of new information in a short period. Practical team challenges create a different kind of learning environment.

New hires have to work with people they may only have recently met, make decisions together and respond when the first idea does not work. Those shared experiences give facilitators useful material for discussion.

The activity itself is only one part of the process. The review is what helps participants connect the experience to communication, teamwork and workplace behaviour.
